Szczesny duly stepped up to save Al Dawsari’s effort from 12 yards out. Lewandowski added a late second to seal the win for Poland but they largely owe that win to Szczesny.
The first goalkeeper that saved a spot kick in the tournament is Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. He kept out Lewandowski’s penalty to help his side to a 0-0 draw with Poland.
The second goalkeeper to save a penalty in the ongoing tournament is Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois.He saved Aphonso Davies’ 10th minute penalty and help his side to a 1-0 win over the Canadians in their opening game of the tournament.
Szczesny’s save today makes him the third goalkeeper to do it in the tournament.
