Former Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has sent a message of support to his former side after they beat West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.
Goals from centre-back partnership Rob Holding and Gabriel Magalhaes were enough to see off the Hammers, who can no longer mathematically finish in the top four.
Tottenham Hotspur had won 3-1 win against Leicester City earlier in the day, meaning it was imperative for Arsenal to get all three points.
As a result, they remain in fourth, two points ahead of their north London rivals and now just three behind west Londoners, Chelsea, who’ve been dragged back into the race after a poor performance at relegation battling Everton.
Pundits and former players have applauded the Gunners‘ resolute performance at the London Stadium, but surprisingly, Sanchez has also chipped in to send his congratulations.
The Chilean left in unfortunate circumstances back in the January 2018 transfer window, as he signed for Manchester United in a deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way.
It’s often been touted as one of the worst deals in recent history after Sanchez and Mkhitaryan flopped at their respective new clubs.
Sanchez has since split opinion amongst Arsenal fans, as the once loved winger was deemed a traitor by some for joining their age old enemy.
Perhaps surprisingly, it seems as though he still wants Arsenal to do well, as seen on Instagram after the Gunners‘ win over the Hammers.
Granit Xhaka posted on his Instagram page after the game to say: “Three BIG points – now we prepare for the next one.” In response, Sanchez commented “Gunners” along with clapping emojis.
Sanchez has his own fond memories of the London Stadium having scored a hat-trick on his first ever appearance there in a 5-1 win.
If Arsenal can find the goals like he used to in red and white, they should be able to close out Spurs in the race for top four.
It’ll ultimately be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks, but Arteta’a side will be confident that they can get the job done.
